HIV FAQs
Key Facts
- Regular testing limits HIV transmission and helps people access treatment early.
- People taking effective treatment for HIV can live long, healthy lives and cannot pass HIV on through sex (U=U).
- You can prevent HIV with PrEP, PEP, UVL and condoms.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks the immune system. Without treatment, it can weaken the body's ability to fight infections and some cancers.
No. HIV and AIDS are different. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a diagnosis that can occur if HIV is left untreated and the immune system becomes severely damaged. Because of effective HIV treatment, AIDS is now rare in Australia.
Anyone can acquire HIV if they are exposed to the virus. In Australia, HIV is more common among:
- Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.
- People who have sex without effective HIV prevention, such as condoms or PrEP.
- People who share injecting equipment.
The best way to know your HIV status is to get tested regularly if you are at risk. Effective prevention options, including PrEP, condoms and U=U, mean HIV is now largely preventable.
Many people have no symptoms after acquiring HIV. Others may experience a short flu-like illness within a few weeks, including fever, rash, sore throat or swollen glands. The only way to know your HIV status is to get tested.
There is currently no cure for HIV, but it can be effectively managed with daily treatment. People who take treatment as prescribed can live long, healthy lives. When treatment reduces HIV to an undetectable level, it cannot be passed on through sex (U=U).
